Redesign Approach
The team decided that the focus of the redesign would be on improving its performance and reducing overall costs while maintaining the footprint to allow users the same amount of storage space. Performance improvements include maximizing the strength and stiffness. Mass is minimized to decrease the amount of material used and therefore part cost. Surface area is minimized to reduce the clamping force required by the molding machine, leading to reduced production cost.
Model and Characterize Existing HDX Shelf
The existing shelf was modeled and simulated in ANSYS to determine baseline values for deformation and stress. These results were referenced as the team modeled and tested new designs.
